City Tax Auditor – Business Tax Adjustments

About the role
The NYC Department of Finance is seeking a detail‑oriented City Tax Auditor to join the Business Tax Adjustments Unit. Reporting to the Assistant Director, you will ensure accurate billing, resolve discrepancies, and uphold tax compliance for a range of business and excise taxes.
Key responsibilities
- Handle billing discrepancy cases, examine taxpayer responses, and determine final dispositions.
- Review tax returns and payments, prepare account adjustments, and generate necessary correspondence.
- Research, correct, and process suspended Business and Excise Tax returns and payments in the Business Tax & Collections System (BTCS) across 12 tax types.
- Interpret accounting principles, auditing standards, and tax laws to calculate correct tax liabilities.
- Respond to taxpayer inquiries regarding reduced credits, refunds, penalties, and interest.
- Review adjustments made by other auditors and coordinate with related units on case management.
Required profile
- Permanent City Tax Auditor civil‑service title or eligibility through Exam No. 4029 or 5046.
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret tax legislation and accounting standards.
- Excellent written communication for drafting correspondence and informing taxpayers.
- Self‑motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently within a public‑service environment.
Required skills
- Proficiency with the Business Tax & Collections System (BTCS).
