Child Life Specialist – Inpatient (Northeast)

About the role

The Child Life Specialist works on the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, supporting pediatric patients and families throughout hospitalization, especially during surgery and procedures. The role collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to improve the patient experience, reduce fear, and enhance coping.

Key responsibilities

• Assess developmental, social, and physical needs of assigned pediatric population and provide appropriate interventions such as preparation and therapeutic play.
• Document patients' developmental level and emotional state, using informal assessment techniques throughout the stay.
• Educate and prepare children and families for medical events, offering relaxation techniques to decrease stress.
• Provide diversional activities in playrooms, activity rooms, and at bedside based on individual capabilities.
• Organize and manage events, special guests, support groups, and volunteer programs.
• Supervise practicum/internship students and manage playroom supplies and inventory.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in child life or a related child development field.
• Completed an approved Child Life Internship of at least 480 hours directed by a Certified Child Life Specialist.
• Obtain and maintain Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) certification within one year of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association within one year of hire.
• Preferred: two years and 4,000 hours of professional child life clinical experience in a hospital setting.
