About the role

The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) provides specialized instruction and consultative services to students who are blind or visually impaired, helping them develop safe, efficient, and independent travel skills. The role supports students in navigating school, community, and other environments based on age, developmental level, visual abilities, and individual needs.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility evaluations and develop individualized lesson plans aligned with IEP goals.
• Provide direct instruction in cane use, sighted‑guide techniques, indoor/outdoor travel, street‑crossing, public transportation, and environmental awareness.
• Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, families, and community professionals to implement accommodations, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology.
• Document student progress, maintain accurate records, and communicate regularly with parents and the educational team.

Required profile

• Current certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through ACVREP or eligibility to obtain it.
• Knowledge of Illinois special education laws, IEP procedures, and FERPA compliance.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to inclusive, student‑centered practices and safety during instruction.
