About the role

The Cane Navigator (Academic Advisor) in Arts & Sciences supports undergraduate student success at the University of Miami by delivering proactive, holistic advising that promotes learning, persistence, progression, and timely graduation.

Key responsibilities

• Provide proactive, developmental academic advising that aligns with best practices and advising theory.
• Establish and maintain sustained advising relationships from a student’s first term through graduation.
• Guide students in understanding program requirements, institutional policies, and degree pathways.
• Educate students about high‑impact practices such as study abroad, research, and internships, and help integrate these experiences into academic plans.
• Develop, monitor, and update individualized academic plans and degree records, regularly assessing progress.
• Investigate and resolve academic issues including registration errors, prerequisite checks, course substitutions, and permission requests.
• Maintain current knowledge of the academic bulletin, calendar, institutional resources, and programs to ensure accurate advising guidance.
• Identify academic, personal, and institutional barriers to student success and coordinate referrals to appropriate campus partners.
