Breakfast Cook - Market Grille

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Breakfast Cook for its Market Grille in Iowa City. Breakfast Cooks are the heart of the morning operation, preparing a wide variety of hot and cold breakfast items. The role involves prepping ingredients, assembling dishes according to restaurant recipes and keeping the kitchen running smoothly from the first shift through the last. Daytime shifts are offered.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers promptly and kindly, and prepare cooking surfaces and the kitchen for service
• Prep vegetables, sides, meats and breakfast foods to recipe and specification, and place food in hot cases, monitoring and refilling as needed
• Prepare items for upcoming shifts and stay up to date on the menu, taking guest orders as needed
• Order product and supplies when necessary or notify the department head of needs
• Follow sanitation procedures, keep the work area clean and organized, and maintain personal hygiene and dress standards
• Work as a team, assist in other parts of the store as needed and take on special projects
• Report to work on schedule and on time

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent experience required
• Six months or less of similar or related work experience preferred
• Ability to safely use sharp knives and blades, and to handle heat and burn hazards from cooking equipment
• Ability to operate a delivery vehicle in line with DOT standards
• Physical demands include standing and walking throughout a shift, repetitive standing, walking, reaching and bending, and exposure to cleaning chemicals and solvents

Required skills

• Simple addition and subtraction, copying figures and counting and recording accurately
• Following verbal or demonstrated directions and communicating supply needs orally or in writing
• Teamwork in a fast-paced kitchen environment

Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen. The position is hourly and reports to the Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers, Food Service Manager and Market Grille Department Manager.
