Baker - Bakery Department

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Baker for its bakery department in Iowa City. The bakery is described as a destination for customers expecting freshness, quality and something that feels homemade. The Baker prepares and bakes the products that fill the cases and fulfill daily orders, from proofing and frying to pulling items from the freezer and leading bakery clerks. This is an hourly, daytime-shift position.

Key responsibilities

• Greet every customer and assist them with their needs throughout the store
• Check orders for the day, set up a timeline and production schedule, and prioritize special and future orders
• Prepare, make up, bake and fry all department products, proofing items as necessary and pulling product from the freezer or cooler
• Check product for freshness and pull by stale date, and inspect incoming products for quality and quantity
• Invoice and put away product as instructed by the Department Manager, and check signage for correct labels and potential safety issues
• Understand the use and maintenance needs of bakery equipment and follow up on issues
• Act as a lead with bakery clerks, guiding and directing them
• Re-merchandise products on the shelf, remove or recycle outdated items, and order supplies as directed by the Bakery Manager
• Write the department schedule and cover for the Bakery Manager's absence
• Follow sanitation procedures, keep the work area clean and safe, and answer the phone promptly to take product orders
• Follow the dress code, hygiene standards and company guidelines, and pitch in with other tasks and special projects

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; department training is helpful
• Over six months up to one year of similar or related experience preferred
• Ability to safely use sharp knives and blades, handle heat and burn hazards, and operate a delivery vehicle to DOT standards where applicable
• Commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for customer and team experience
