Boiler Operator – Downtown Minneapolis

About the role

The Boiler Operator (O&M) works in the Downtown Minneapolis district energy system, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the role is hands‑on and supports both routine maintenance and emergency response across the plant and its distribution network.

Key responsibilities

• Become familiar with main, standby, and remote plants as well as the distribution system.
• Place primary and auxiliary equipment in service, protecting personnel and assets during emergencies.
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on boilers, chillers, turbines, pumps, and related equipment.
• Coordinate job planning and interface with contractors for maintenance or project work.
• Complete all required logs, records, and paperwork accurately.
• Maintain workstations in good order and perform additional duties such as facility cleaning and meter reading.

Required profile

• Minimum two (2) years of steady experience with steam and chilled water equipment, steam turbines, and water pumps.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• State of Minnesota First Class “A” Operating Engineer’s License (or ability to obtain within 2 years; limited extensions possible).
• Ability to work rotating shifts, lift up to 50 lb, and operate in adverse weather conditions.
