Bioinformatician – Marine Genomics Lab

About the role

The Lotterhos Lab at the Center for Marine Ecological Genomics seeks a Bioinformatician to develop and maintain scalable pipelines for large‑scale population genomic data, supporting a consortium aiming to compile 5,000 genomes from 100 marine species.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain reproducible bioinformatics pipelines that scale across many population genomic datasets.
• Align short‑read sequencing data (whole‑genome and RADseq) to reference genomes and evaluate mapping quality.
• Perform downstream analyses such as variant calling, filtering, and quality control.
• Document pipelines and analyses for internal use and publication, and develop tutorials and website content.
• Collaborate with wet‑lab and computational team members to define data standards and ensure reproducibility.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in a relevant field (Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, etc.).
• 2–5 years of hands‑on bioinformatics experience with genomics data.
• Experience working in Unix/Linux environments and with high‑performance computing job schedulers (SLURM, HTCondor).

Required skills

• Short‑read alignment tools: BWA, Bowtie2, STAR.
• Downstream processing: SAMtools, GATK, Picard.
• Workflow managers: Snakemake, Nextflow.
• Scripting: Python, R, Bash.
• Version control: Git; containerization: Docker, Singularity/Apptainer.
• Population‑genomic tools: ANGSD, PLINK, ADMIXTURE, TreeMix.
