Backend Engineer

About the role

Layer is building a modern accounting platform that integrates directly into the everyday tools used by small‑business owners. As a Backend Engineer you will help shape the core services that power this platform, working closely with product and design teams to deliver reliable, scalable APIs.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain Kotlin‑based micro‑services using the Ktor framework.
• Implement and optimize PostgreSQL databases (RDS) and manage data access via the Exposed ORM.
• Write automated tests with Kotest and JUnit to ensure code quality.
• Set up CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions and deploy containerized services to AWS ECS behind API Gateway.
• Monitor application health using Betterstack and Sentry, and troubleshoot production issues.

Required profile

• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience on strong teams.
• Track record of building new products from scratch and contributing to team growth.
• Curiosity about both technical challenges and business problems, especially in fintech.
• Ability to balance competing priorities and take ownership of product decisions.
