AVP/VP Underwriting Builders Risk

About the role

DUAL North America is seeking an AVP/VP Underwriter for its Builders Risk division. The role is exempt and full-time, reports to the SVP Underwriting or above, involves up to 30% travel and pays $140,000-$200,000. The underwriter acts as subject matter expert in wood frame builders risk project evaluation and underwriting, manages a team of 1-5 through the employee lifecycle and owns profitable portfolio growth.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and grow your own portfolio of projects, evaluating risk and using carrier capacity within carrier agreements and underwriting guidelines
• Train and develop Associate Underwriters and Underwriters, and manage a small to mid-sized team, including performance evaluations, hiring, recruiting and termination decisions
• Define team production goals aligned to division goals and review referrals from team members
• Curate a portfolio of business in line with Underwriting Guidelines and pricing tools, and may give input to governance and guideline definition
• Own division-level projects or initiatives outside your direct expertise, and possibly manage a small team's budget including staffing and T&E costs
• Build relationships with capacity providers and act as subject matter expert for peers and leadership
• Execute annual new business goals, including premium income, quote numbers and hit ratios
• Foster new relationships with key producers to grow business

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in risk management, psychology, criminal justice, mathematics, finance, business or a related field preferred
• 5-12 years of relevant underwriting experience
• In-depth understanding of technical underwriting principles and risk assessment
• Proven ability to manage and build broker and client relationships
• Ability to stay seated about 50% of the time and to travel up to 30% for client meetings, conferences or industry events

Required skills

• Advanced understanding of technical underwriting principles and risk underwriting characteristics, including wood frame and renovation markets, capacity limits and pricing cycles
• Strong analytical, negotiation and decision-making skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
