Associate Underwriter - Windstorm Risk

About the role

DUAL North America is seeking an Associate Underwriter for its Windstorm Risk division in Chicago, Illinois. The role supports a team of Underwriters by helping evaluate windstorm risk exposures, gather data and support the underwriting of wind insurance policies. It is a full-time, hybrid position with 0-10% travel, and the salary is $70,000-$85,000.

Key responsibilities

• Triage account submissions for Underwriters and provide backup support while traveling in the market
• Gather and compile the information needed to quote and bind accounts
• Write and send correspondence such as declination letters, quote follow-ups and subjectivity reminders
• Attend weekly underwriting meetings, ask questions and understand why deals are lost
• Build relationships with producers under the supervision of senior Underwriters
• Fill in for other team members during peak periods and complete assigned clerical and administrative duties
• Review inspections, identify issues and process post-inspection changes

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in risk management, finance, business or a related field preferred
• 0-1 year of underwriting or insurance experience
• Foundational knowledge of insurance principles
• Ability to follow policies and procedures, work independently for long periods and learn quickly
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Able to stay seated 50% of the time, with occasional movement in the office

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
• Basic understanding of technical underwriting principles and risk underwriting characteristics
