Authorization Specialist – Business Office

About the role

This full‑time position in the Business Office at our Birmingham, AL location supports patient care by obtaining and maintaining prior authorizations for medical services, procedures, treatments, and medications.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and address all prior‑authorization requirements based on patient insurance and scheduled services.
• Review and verify completeness of authorization requests, resolve missing or inconsistent information with clinical staff.
• Submit requests through payer portals, phone, fax, or other processes, ensuring required clinical documentation is included.
• Track pending, approved, denied, and expired authorizations and communicate status to sites and Patient Financial Counselors.
• Maintain accurate logs, reports, and documentation of authorization numbers, dates, and payer requirements.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least three years of medical office experience, preferably with prior authorizations, insurance procedures, medical billing, or patient interaction.
• Strong understanding of HIPAA and patient confidentiality guidelines.
