Asylum Seeker Legal Team Intern (Unpaid)

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a motivated intern to support its Asylum Seeker Legal Services team in New York. This unpaid position offers hands‑on experience drafting immigration applications, communicating with clients, and assisting legal staff.

Key responsibilities

• Assist immigration attorneys in preparing asylum, employment authorization, TPS, and other immigration applications.
• Coordinate legal consultations and maintain up‑to‑date client files.
• Conduct research on U.S. immigration issues and policies.
• Perform clerical duties such as sorting, filing, and data tracking.
• Provide follow‑up communication, translation, and interpretation as needed.

Required profile

• Undergraduate or law student studying social sciences, international relations, or a related field.
• Minimum 15 hours per week (35 + hours preferred).
• Strong desire to help immigrants in New York and ability to work independently.
• Excellent communication, cultural sensitivity, and attention to detail.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Spanish (required).
• Competency with Microsoft Office for document preparation and file management.
