Associate Patient Care Coordinator (Pre-Registration)

About the role

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring an Associate Patient Care Coordinator in Brewer, Maine. Acting as the first point of contact for patients preparing for upcoming appointments, the role requires excellent customer service and attention to detail. It involves accurately and efficiently pre-registering patients by updating their demographic and insurance information before the date of service. The position is open to employees working 9:00am-5:30pm EST, Monday to Friday; training is 3-6 weeks, 8:00am-4:30pm EST, Monday to Friday, and is conducted onsite.

Key responsibilities

• Provide excellent customer service to patients, providers and other departments by phone or in person
• Collect and verify patient demographic and insurance information, making changes as needed
• Update the encounter after verifying insurance coverage and benefits
• Facilitate conversations with patients to explain benefits and collect copays and other patient liabilities before service
• Engage other departments to help with patient questions or needs
• Track department service levels, abandonment rates and other metrics, and meet productivity and audit goals
• Escalate outstanding needs so pre-registration and financial clearance happen before the service date
• Perform other duties upon request

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• 6+ months of experience in an office, customer service, phone support or call center setting
• Ability to work Monday-Friday, 9am-5:30pm
• Influenza vaccination for the current season or commitment to get vaccinated when available
• Aged 18 or older
• Preferred: 1+ years of registration experience in a hospital or medical setting, understanding of medical terminology, knowledge of insurance policies and procedures, and previous work for Northern Light Health
