Associate Medical Director, Primary Care (MD/DO)

About the role

Petaluma Health Center, serving Southern Sonoma County and West Marin, is hiring an Associate Medical Director, Primary Care (MD/DO) in Rohnert Park. The role is an operational and clinical leadership position supervising an assigned team of providers, working closely with the Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer on clinical, operational, quality and strategic initiatives. It includes direct provider supervision, operational oversight and day-to-day support for provider performance, scheduling, access and quality outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Clinical duties (about 65%): diagnose and treat patients within the scope of your license for a defined panel, back up nurse practitioners and physician assistants on site or by phone, deliver evidence-based care to diverse and underserved populations, and take part in quality improvement and population health initiatives.
• Provider leadership (about 15%): supervise an assigned provider team, ensure competency through chart audits, direct observation and performance reviews, help set development goals, oversee clinical risk management, and manage credentialing, privileging and onboarding.
• Operations, scheduling and access: manage the provider schedule template, approve PTO requests, collaborate with operations, nursing and front office leadership, and take part in operations and leadership meetings.
• Performance oversight: monitor productivity, access metrics, panel performance and quality indicators, and support accountability for documentation, coding accuracy and visit utilization.
• Quality improvement and strategy: lead team-based quality improvement, work with Quality Improvement, Population Health and Informatics teams, and support recruitment, retention and provider wellness initiatives.

Required profile

• Graduate of an accredited medical school, board-certified MD or DO with a current California license and DEA registration.
• Three or more years of primary care experience in a family practice setting in good standing.
• One or more years of management experience is highly desirable.
• Medical specialty license or certification, board certified or board eligible in a specified area, with CME maintained for renewal.
• CPR certified.

Required skills

• Ability to read and interpret technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
• Ability to communicate with customers, regulatory agencies and business partners.
• Bilingual English and Spanish, written and verbal, preferred.
• Knowledge of legal and ethical standards, accreditation requirements, and quality, safety and infection control standards.
