Assistant United States Attorney – Criminal Division (Term)

About the role

The Eastern District of Texas is seeking qualified attorneys for term appointments as Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division. Selected candidates will prosecute federal criminal matters, primarily drug trafficking and criminal immigration cases, and may handle a variety of other federal offenses.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with federal, state, and local law enforcement to manage investigations and prosecutions.
• Advise agents on legal questions and Department of Justice policy.
• Recommend charging decisions and propose dispositions for assigned cases.
• Research, draft, and argue legal pleadings in federal court.
• Investigate and pursue asset forfeiture related to prosecutions.
• Oversee and coordinate litigation assignments for legal support staff.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national.
• J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in a state bar.
• Pass a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax checks, drug test).
• Eligibility for Selective Service registration if applicable.
• Residency within the district or within 25 miles of it.
