About the role
The U.S. Attorney's Office is seeking an Assistant United States Attorney to join its Appellate Division. This term position, located in one of the Texas districts (Beaumont, Plano, Sherman, or Tyler), supports federal criminal appeals before the Fifth Circuit.
Key responsibilities
- Research and draft appellate briefs, post‑conviction responses, and other legal filings.
- Present oral arguments on complex constitutional, statutory, evidentiary, procedural, and sentencing issues.
- Handle cases involving immigration, national security, public safety, and other federal offenses.
- Provide real‑time trial assistance to fellow AUSAs.
- Progressively assume more complex assignments as experience grows.
Required profile
- U.S. citizenship or national status.
- J.D. degree and active membership in a U.S. state bar.
- Residency within the appointed district or within 25 miles of it.
- Successful completion of pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax, drug testing) and ongoing background investigation.
- Selective Service registration if applicable.
