Assistant Store Manager (Merchandising Trainee)

About the role

The Home Depot is hiring a Merchandising Assistant Store Manager in Training (MASM-IT) for its South Olathe store. This is a hands-on training position, lasting up to 6 weeks, where the trainee learns the key responsibilities of a Specialty Assistant Store Manager, including the Manager on Duty duties and oversight of the Merchandising departments (Garden, Hardware, Lumber, Building Materials, Plumbing and Electrical). The trainee works alongside the Store Manager, Assistant Store Managers and merchandising field teams.

Key responsibilities

• Customer experience: supervise associates in the selling effort, drive customer service and associate engagement, and resolve customer concerns promptly.
• Operations management: run opening and closing procedures, follow company policies and hold associates accountable, and follow store SOPs, especially safety compliance, to reduce shrink.
• Safety: make sure self and associates follow safety and hazmat procedures and Safety Matters guidelines.
• Sales and productivity: help plan merchandise placement and signing, support stock integrity through inventory management, and learn to operate store equipment and systems and manage daily financial operations.
• Training: complete a structured program covering operations, customer service, sales and profitability, staffing and scheduling, resolving stock shortages, performance reviews and the disciplinary process, plus all assigned training modules and assessments.

Required profile

• Able to work in the United States and at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or GED; preferred: bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
• Preferred: 3 years of work experience and 3 years of leadership experience.
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams; competencies listed are action oriented, collaboration, customer focus, driving results and resourcefulness.

Physical requirements include standing or walking continuously and lifting or carrying moderate-weight items (8-20 pounds); travel is typically under 5% overnight. The position reports to the Store Manager and has no direct reports.
