Assistant Scientist – Oceanographic Research

About the role

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami seeks a full‑time Assistant Scientist to lead and analyze oceanographic field campaigns. The role focuses on water‑mass analysis of in‑situ data collected during repeat trans‑ocean hydrographic sections.

Key responsibilities

• Lead seagoing activities for in‑situ oceanographic data collection, manage logistics, and oversee data reduction for sustained trans‑ocean hydrographic sections.
• Analyze spatiotemporal variability of ocean circulation and water‑mass characteristics, evaluating impacts on weather, climate, and ecosystems.
• Develop and maintain software tools for processing and visualizing oceanographic datasets, and disseminate results through peer‑reviewed publications and conference presentations.
• Collaborate with NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and pursue research funding through joint grant proposals.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography or a closely related discipline.
• At least one year of post‑doctoral research experience with a record of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Hands‑on experience collecting shipboard oceanographic data, including CTD, dissolved‑oxygen, and LADCP casts.
• Demonstrated ability to lead field operations and strong communication skills for academic and public audiences.

Required skills

• CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) measurement techniques.
• Dissolved‑oxygen profiling.
• LADCP (Lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) operation.
