Assistant Restaurant Manager

About the role

Alvarado Street Brewery is hiring a full-time, salaried exempt Assistant Restaurant Manager for its Monterey brewpub. The role is for someone eager to learn the ins and outs of restaurant management and expand their experience in a managerial position. The Assistant Manager acts as the face of the brewery for locals and regulars, champions a culture of ethics and fair treatment, and supports the General Manager in keeping standards, protocols and processes in compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Support payroll processing, schedule management and employee onboarding, including entering tips into Toast and new employee data into the POS
• Manage monthly inventory, handle bank deposits and balance the safe, and process invoices accurately
• Work the lunch and dinner shifts on the floor, assisting servers, bussers, runners and bartenders, and coach, counsel and discipline staff fairly and consistently
• Resolve conflicts, keep staff on task, ensure rest and meal breaks, and keep the upstairs storage organized and stocked
• Take part in liquor and wine tastings, understand ordering and inventory procedures, and assess front-of-house orders, conveying needs to the chef or ordering independently through vendors such as US Foods
• Attend weekly manager meetings, lead staff stand-ups, teach menu and beverage knowledge, and keep management informed of shift events by email
• Manage labor and supply costs in line with the quarterly and annual budgets, and communicate with HR on hiring, terms and changes

Required profile

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent
• Previous supervisory experience, preferably in a restaurant, and prior experience in a fast-paced restaurant environment
• Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays
• Food handler certification
• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
• Able to stand, lift up to 30+ pounds, and work in crowded, noisy and sometimes slippery environments

Required skills

• Intermediate accounting and arithmetic skills
• Ability to audit and correct time records, labor, budget and inventory reports
• Strong leadership, communication and guest service skills, with conflict resolution abilities
• Problem-solving under pressure and meeting deadlines
