Assistant Professor of Physics

About the role

The Physics Department and the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks invite applications for a joint tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in space physics or a related field. The successful candidate will join both the Department of Physics and the Geophysical Institute, contributing to research, teaching, and service.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate physics courses across the curriculum, including online and in‑person formats.
• Mentor and advise graduate students in the Physics Department.
• Conduct independent research in space physics, aeronomy, or other geophysical areas, leveraging institute facilities.
• Secure external funding to support and expand the research program.
• Participate in departmental, institute, and university service and outreach activities.

Required profile

• PhD in Physics, Space Physics, Geophysics, or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated ability to teach a broad range of physics subjects.
• Experience working with diverse student populations and supporting student retention.
• Commitment to integrating Indigenous perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches into teaching.
• Readiness to start at the beginning of the Spring 2027 semester.

Required skills

• Research expertise in space physics, aeronomy, or geophysics.
• Ability to obtain and manage external research funding.
• Proficiency with large‑scale computing resources and instrumentation facilities.
