Assistant Manager - Store Operations

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring an Assistant Manager of Store Operations (also listed as Assistant Manager Perishables or Assistant Manager Health Wellness Home) in Manhattan. The role supervises and coordinates the activities of employees in the store's departments, ensuring customers' needs are met. It reports to the District Store Director and the Store Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Set a friendly, efficient tone for customers and employees, greet customers by name where possible, and help them find products, load or unload heavy items and pass on their suggestions.
• Oversee training, handle employee issues and coordinate disciplinary procedures, and evaluate employee performance to recommend promotion, transfer or dismissal.
• Assist management with pricing and product blends, and set the location of ad and promotional displays so that product quality and quantities meet demand and profitability.
• Ensure compliance with store accounting procedures, safety procedures and accident reporting, and oversee building, ground and sanitation maintenance.
• Order merchandise, coordinate compliance with security, sales and record-keeping policies, and forecast and review the labor schedule.
• Recruit and interview applicants, orient new hires, stay current on market trends and provide ongoing education to staff.
• Handle cash registers, sell merchandise to employees and customers, and recommend additions, deletions and shelf allocations of merchandise.

Required profile

• High school or equivalent education.
• One year or more of retail experience, including performing the duties of an Assistant Manager.
• Ability to solve practical problems, do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages, and interview people.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently, and to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach and stand.
• Must be 18 years old or older.

The position is exempt under FLSA, involves fast-paced work with exposure to dust, noise and temperature extremes, and requires a pre-employment drug screen.
