Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Belonging

About the role

The Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Belonging provides strategic leadership for campus‑wide initiatives that foster student connection, leadership development, community service, and a sense of belonging at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and execute a variety of events, including campus traditions, leadership workshops, and service projects.
• Coordinate logistics, manage event budgets, secure venues, negotiate contracts, and oversee risk management.
• Supervise approximately five Student Consultants and oversee 25‑75 student volunteers who help plan and run campus events.
• Maintain and promote a comprehensive programming calendar that highlights student organization opportunities.
• Collaborate with academic leaders and co‑curricular partners to create cross‑divisional learning outcomes.
• Lead marketing and promotional efforts to encourage student participation.
• Conduct assessments to improve event planning, membership development, leadership curricula, service opportunities, recruitment, budgeting, and program effectiveness.
• Handle email, phone, and other inquiries related to student activities, leadership development, and community service.
• Work nights and weekends as needed to support campus events.

Required profile

• Experience supervising student staff or volunteers.
• Proven ability to plan and execute events of varying scale.
• Strong budget management and logistical coordination skills.
• Excellent communication skills for handling inquiries and marketing initiatives.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
