About the role
The Library Specialist II – Periodicals supports the Library Operations unit at West Texas A&M University by managing the flow, cataloging, and maintenance of print and microform periodicals. This full‑time, onsite position ensures that magazines, newspapers, journals and other serials are accurately processed, accessible, and well‑organized for faculty, staff, and students.
Key responsibilities
- Process and distribute incoming periodicals, including magazines, newspapers, and journals.
- Maintain shelf organization and microform storage for all print and microform periodicals.
- Compile usage statistics for print and microform collections.
- Review vendor invoices for accuracy and handle title changes, ceased publications, and subscription cancellations.
- Communicate with suppliers to resolve issues and claim missing items.
- Maintain and clean serials records in the online cataloging system.
- Assist with added volumes of reference titles and electronic journal subscription monitoring.
- Provide telephone reference service for serials holdings during business hours.
- Support training of unit staff, contribute to documentation, and assist with supply requests.
Required profile
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established library procedures.
- Effective coordination and communication with library staff and external vendors.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks related to periodicals processing and catalog maintenance.
Required skills
- Proficiency with the library’s online cataloging system for serials.
- Data entry and coding skills for serials records.
