Advanced Practice Provider – Cardiothoracic Surgery (NP/PA)

About the role

The Cleveland Clinic Health System seeks a qualified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the Cardiothoracic Surgery team at Indian River Hospital. The role involves comprehensive patient care across pre‑operative, intra‑operative and post‑operative phases.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate, treat, and document cardiothoracic surgery patients in the ICU, floor, and clinic settings.
• Perform conduit harvesting (endoscopic and open vein and radial artery) and act as first assist for cardiac and thoracic cases, including CABG, valve repairs, aortic repairs, and VATS lung resections.
• Round on ICU and floor patients (2‑3 per PA), place and follow up on orders, and complete progress notes, consult notes, discharge summaries, and patient education.
• Provide office care: clinic visits, minor procedures, phone triage, and patient/family education.
• Participate in cross‑coverage for thoracic surgery cases and respond to emergent situations as needed.

Required profile

• At least 1 year of cardiothoracic surgery experience.
• National certification and licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
• Ability to work collaboratively with supervising physicians and multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Conduit harvesting (endoscopic and open techniques).
• First‑assist skills for cardiac and thoracic procedures.
• Proficiency with electronic medical record documentation and order entry.
• ICU rounding and post‑operative patient management.
• Performance of procedural skills such as injections, suturing, wound care, and basic bedside procedures.
