Accounting & Finance Manager (Hands-On)

About the role

Political Asylum Lawyers is a Houston-based immigration law firm focused on asylum cases. It is hiring an Accounting & Finance Manager (hands-on) to manage the firm's financial operations, accounting systems, billing, accounts receivable, cash flow forecasting, financial reporting, trust accounting compliance, payroll oversight, tax reporting coordination, internal controls and finance-related operational projects. The role is the firm's first level of financial analysis and operational financial control, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial records. It starts with learning the firm's systems and working with existing staff and providers, then gradually takes on planning and reporting responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day financial operations with existing staff and service providers, keeping procedures documented and financial records accurate and up to date
• Follow financial issues through to resolution, assigning owners and deadlines and confirming agreed actions are completed
• Prepare, review and analyse monthly financial statements and reports, validate supporting records and assumptions, and prepare annual and periodic budgets and forecasts with variance explanations for the Owner/CFO
• Maintain a forward-looking cash flow forecast, track year-over-year revenue growth, gross profit and operating profit, and support strategic planning
• Own and improve the billing and collections process, monitor accounts receivable aging, handle chargebacks, refund requests and billing disputes, and recommend process improvements
• Monitor trust/IOLTA accounts, own or review three-way trust reconciliations, and resolve trust accounting discrepancies
• Identify financial risks and reporting gaps, recommend corrective actions, and support audits, tax preparation and outside accounting reviews
• Complete balance sheet, payroll liability and bank reconciliations, and monitor payroll taxes, tax liabilities, vendor obligations and compliance deadlines
• Oversee the bookkeeper, billing specialist, payroll provider and outsourced finance vendors, delegating recurring work while retaining controls and review
