Wildland Firefighter / Ranger – Georgia Forestry Commission

About the role

The Georgia Forestry Commission is seeking motivated individuals to join its elite wildland firefighting team. You will work in the Quitman, Stewart and Webstar districts, protecting Georgia’s forest resources and responding to fire emergencies.

Key responsibilities

• Operate fire engines, hoselays and heavy equipment to control and extinguish wildland fires.
• Maintain buildings, grounds, and firefighting equipment, ensuring proper operation.
• Participate in forestry programs such as reforestation, community outreach, and school activities.
• Inspect properties for compliance with fire safety regulations.
• Respond to fire calls, accidents, and other emergencies, including on‑call duty after hours and on weekends.
• Construct pre‑suppression fire breaks using medium to heavy‑duty crawler tractors.

Required profile

• Valid Class A CDL learner’s permit (or license) with ability to obtain a full CDL within 12 weeks of hire.
• Successful completion of background investigation, medical evaluation, and physical fitness testing.
• Pass the Moderate Work Capacity Test (2‑mile hike with a 25‑lb pack in 30 minutes) and annual fitness re‑testing.
