Trial Attorney – Appellate Section

About the role

The National Fraud Enforcement Division seeks experienced attorneys for permanent Appellate Counsel positions. The role involves representing the United States in federal courts of appeals on fraud matters and supporting the Division’s broader enforcement portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and argue appellate briefs and oral arguments before federal courts of appeals.
• Draft recommendations to the Solicitor General and assist with Supreme Court filings, including certiorari petitions and merits briefs.
• Provide legal advice and research to trial attorneys and senior management on appellate and policy issues.
• Develop training on recent appellate decisions, legislation, and emerging legal developments.
• Assist with internal government requests, charging decisions, and disposition proposals.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national with a J.D. degree and active bar membership.
• For GS‑14: at least 2.5 years post‑J.D. experience, including specialized appellate work equivalent to GS‑13.
• For GS‑15: at least 4 years post‑J.D. experience, including specialized appellate work equivalent to GS‑14.
• Ability to obtain a background investigation and meet DOJ financial disclosure requirements.

Required skills

• Legal analysis and drafting of appellate briefs, memoranda, and court documents.
• Experience with federal appellate court procedures and oral argument.
• Knowledge of white‑collar criminal enforcement and federal criminal litigation.
