Trial Attorney – Office of Immigration Litigation

About the role

The Office of Immigration Litigation (OIL) seeks experienced attorneys to lead high‑impact immigration cases in federal circuit courts of appeals and district courts nationwide. Attorneys will work on complex statutory, constitutional, and administrative issues affecting immigration enforcement and policy.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute litigation strategy, including drafting complaints, motions, briefs, and participating in hearings and oral arguments.
• Coordinate with agency clients, engage in settlement negotiations, and advise on appellate matters such as stays of removal and summary affirmance.
• Handle attorney‑fees litigation and serve as expert consultant on immigration‑related inquiries from Congress and other DOJ components.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national, able to obtain Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.
• J.D. from an accredited institution and active bar membership in any U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
• Legal experience ranging from 1 year (GS‑11) to 4+ years (GS‑15) post‑J.D., with strong academic credentials and advocacy skills.

Required skills

• Legal research and writing, including drafting complex appellate briefs.
• Oral advocacy in federal courts, including oral arguments and hearings.
• Experience with immigration law, administrative law, and constitutional issues.
