Staff+ Software Engineer – Storage & Transfer

About the role

Anthropic’s exabyte‑scale, multi‑cloud storage infrastructure underpins training, CI, sandboxing, inference, warehousing, and long‑term data retention. As a Staff+ Software Engineer you will shape the technical strategy, own high‑stakes architectural decisions, and deliver secure, fast access to stored data across regions. You will partner with research, training, infrastructure, business, and data teams to drive strategic investments that enable safe, useful AI at speed.

Key responsibilities

• Define and evolve the architecture for Anthropic’s storage layers.
• Build strong relationships with users to understand access patterns, security, and business requirements.
• Partner with cloud providers, networking, and datacenter teams on infrastructure primitives.
• Translate user needs into scalable system designs and drive alignment across orgs.
• Make trade‑offs across durability, availability, consistency, performance, security, and cost.
• Lead cross‑functional teams to ship new capabilities safely and quickly.
• Provide simple, consistent interfaces across backend stacks and abstraction layers.
• Plan and execute large migrations with minimal user disruption.
• Participate in operations: SLOs, observability, capacity planning, incident response, on‑call.
• Stay hands‑on in code and production, especially in critical and complex areas.

Required profile

• Experience designing, building, and operating large‑scale distributed storage systems (object store, distributed file system, or block storage).
• Deep knowledge of replication, erasure coding, consistency models, metadata management, durability, high availability, access controls, and security.
• Proven ownership or technical leadership of complex infrastructure used by multiple orgs.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and hands‑on coding ability in at least one systems language.
• Experience with security, on‑call, incident response, capacity planning, and cost efficiency at scale.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross‑org alignment.
