Sports Instructor (Part-Time)

About the role

The YMCA of Greater Boston is looking for a Sports Instructor to lead sports classes for children and adults of all ages at the Roxbury YMCA. Classes run on weekday afternoons and weekend mornings. The position is part-time and requires excellent communication with children and parents, expertise in a variety of sports and the ability to work independently.

Key responsibilities

• Coach sports programs using the provided curriculum and your own designs, emphasising skill development, sportsmanship and the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honest, Respect and Responsibility.
• Keep the group focused, meet players where they are in age and skill level, and provide real-time feedback with positive encouragement.
• Maintain a safe playing environment, reduce risks and follow guidelines.
• Prepare for each session, set up the play field in advance and clean up afterwards.
• Communicate professionally with parents about successes, challenges and information.
• Keep accurate attendance records and follow attendance, participation and safety policies.
• Attend meetings, trainings, events and other YMCA functions as needed, and act as a role model and leader for the Y.

Required profile

• One to two years of related experience preferred, for example as a sports coach or volunteer.
• CPR, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications, and Child Abuse Prevention Training (these trainings are provided on hire).
• Energetic, motivated and well organised, with a passion for children and sports.

Required skills

• Excellent relationship building and conflict resolution skills.
• Clear coaching skills with instruction, feedback and positive motivation.
• Detail oriented, with strong organisational and planning skills.
• Ability to manage small and large groups of children and/or adults.
