Senior Systems Engineer II

About the role

Elsevier is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer II to design, build and maintain the AWS‑based infrastructure that powers its global information platforms. The role involves owning complex systems initiatives, mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with software, security and operations teams to ensure scalable, resilient and secure services for millions of researchers and clinicians.

Key responsibilities

• Design, deploy and operate highly available AWS infrastructure using services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS, VPC and IAM.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code with Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Build and improve CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins) for automated testing, deployment and rollback.
• Own monitoring, logging and alerting using CloudWatch, Datadog or Prometheus/Grafana.
• Lead root‑cause analysis of production incidents and drive long‑term remediation.
• Implement disaster recovery, backup and business continuity strategies.
• Champion cloud security best practices, including least‑privilege IAM, network segmentation and compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA).
• Identify cost‑optimization opportunities across compute, storage and networking.
• Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers and participate in code/design reviews.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in systems or infrastructure engineering with strong hands‑on AWS experience.
• Proven expertise with core AWS services (EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS, Lambda, ECS/EKS).
• Experience building IaC using Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash or Go.
• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex distributed systems under pressure.
