Research Engineer – Pre-training Large Language Models

About the role

Anthropic is seeking a Research Engineer to join its Pre‑training team, developing the next generation of large language models that are safe, steerable and trustworthy. The role sits at the intersection of cutting‑edge research and practical engineering, contributing to AI systems that align with human values.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research and implement solutions in model architecture, algorithms, data processing, and optimizer development.
• Lead small research projects independently while collaborating on larger initiatives.
• Design, run, and analyze scientific experiments to advance understanding of large language models.
• Optimize and scale training infrastructure for efficiency and reliability.
• Develop dev tooling to enhance team productivity.
• Contribute across the stack, from low‑level optimizations to high‑level model design.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field.
• Strong software engineering track record building complex systems.
• Expertise in Python and deep‑learning frameworks, preferably PyTorch.
• Experience with large‑scale machine learning, especially language models.
• Ability to balance research goals with engineering constraints.
• Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and collaborative skills.
• Commitment to the societal impacts of AI work.
