Professional Healthcare Worker – Public Health Internship

About the role

The Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking a Professional Healthcare Worker to support epidemiology and notifiable disease surveillance as part of a practicum experience. This temporary position is designed for students enrolled in an accredited public health degree program and offers flexible, hybrid work.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct case‑patient interviews for communicable disease surveillance, special studies and outbreak investigations.
• Enter and manage data using Excel and the Georgia electronic notifiable disease surveillance system.
• Perform medical chart reviews, data collection, and other clerical tasks supporting notifiable disease surveillance.
• Assist with follow‑up on reportable enteric disease and invasive bacterial disease cases as part of the Emerging Infections Program.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and current enrollment in a graduate public health program.
• At least one year of related work experience (or equivalent academic experience).
• Ability to work 15‑20 hours per week remotely with flexibility to attend the DPH office in downtown Atlanta for in‑person duties.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with databases and Excel.
• Experience conducting interviews.
• Spanish‑language proficiency.
• Enrollment in a Master of Public Health or related degree.
