Principal Data Scientist - RDT Applied AI
roche · South San Francisco
Job description
About the role
Roche is looking for a Principal Data Scientist for its RDT Applied AI team in South San Francisco. This is a high-impact consulting role where advanced technical expertise meets business strategy in a highly regulated environment. As an embedded consultant and strategic partner to the Pharma Commercial and Product R&D teams, you will guide the design and architecture of complex data science and AI solutions, advise on AI frameworks that drive business value, and champion the re-use of Roche's existing AI and data platforms.
Key responsibilities
- Advise Pharma Commercial and Product R&D teams on their highest-priority AI initiatives, turning ambiguous business and product challenges into robust AI/ML strategies.
- Promote the use of Roche's current AI platform capabilities and feed back technological gaps and new requirements to platform engineering teams, influencing the AI platform roadmap.
- Ensure all AI architectures respect the compliance, data privacy and regulatory implications (e.g. GxP) of healthcare data.
- Partner with senior leadership in Commercial and R&D to inform strategic decisions and explain complex algorithms and compliance to non-technical partners.
- Oversee the architectural direction of multiple end-to-end data science projects, advise on AI initiatives and lead the consultative phase of high-impact projects.
- Develop bespoke analytical strategies and advise teams on the robustness, scalability and longevity of deployed models in production.
Required profile
- Master's degree in Biostatistics, Computer Science, Data Science or a relevant discipline; PhD strongly preferred.
- At least 7 years of direct, related experience in Data Science with AI/ML technologies.
- Proven experience advising senior leadership on high-level strategic decisions; advisory rather than execution experience is highly desired.
- Familiarity with the pharma/healthcare environment and with compliance, regulatory (GxP) and data privacy implications of AI in healthcare.
- Experience designing, promoting and implementing enterprise-wide data science frameworks and platforms.
- Strong leadership, mentorship, communication and stakeholder management skills.
Required skills
- Expert-level proficiency in multiple programming languages; Python is essential, R is a plus.
- In-depth knowledge of machine learning, GenAI techniques and experimental design.
- System integration and platform architecture, including data architecture and production deployment and monitoring.
What we offer
- Expected salary range of $185,200 - $343,900 depending on experience, qualifications and location; actual pay determined by the employer.
- A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and company performance.
- The position qualifies for the benefits described in the original posting.
