Pharmacy Technician – Sterile Products Preparation

About the role

The Pharmacy Technician Specialist works on the inpatient pharmacy team, preparing and delivering sterile admixture products for adult and pediatric patients at Ochsner Medical Center. The position follows a 7‑on, 7‑off schedule and operates under pharmacist supervision.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare sterile admixture products, including IV snap‑ons, large‑volume parenterals, syringes, chemotherapy, and bulk‑manufactured items using aseptic techniques.
• Operate and maintain specialized pharmacy equipment such as IV safety software and barcode scanners, and perform scheduled maintenance to ensure sterility.
• Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, and terminal cleaning of the IV room and adhere to safety guidelines for handling hazardous medications.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 6 months experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
• Current Pharmacy Technician Certification from the state Board of Pharmacy.
• ASHP Sterile Product Preparation Certificate within 90 days of hire (or 5 years IV production experience in lieu of the certificate).

Required skills

• Proficiency in sterile technique and aseptic technique.
• Knowledge of pharmaceutical mathematics.
• Computer skills with Windows‑style applications and pharmacy‑specific software.
• Experience operating IV safety software and barcode scanning equipment.
