Payroll Specialist

About the role

Vulcan Elements is seeking a Payroll Specialist to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing for its growing workforce in North Carolina. The role will support employees across sites, maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and serve as the primary point of contact for payroll‑related inquiries.

Key responsibilities

• Verify employee timesheets are approved by managers before processing.
• Calculate wages, overtime, bonuses, and deductions using systems such as Rippling, ADP, or QuickBooks Payroll.
• Process regular and off‑cycle payroll runs, including corrections and urgent adjustments.
• Enter and maintain data for benefits deductions, tax withholdings, and direct deposit preferences.
• Onboard new hires into the payroll system and manage terminations, ensuring final paychecks meet state deadlines.
• Maintain organized, audit‑ready payroll records and employee compensation history.
• Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies and employee inquiries promptly.
• Ensure ongoing compliance with wage, hour, and payroll tax laws, updating processes as regulations change.
• Process court‑ordered deductions such as wage garnishments and tax levies confidentially.
• Prepare and file payroll tax reports (Form 941, state unemployment, W‑2s, 1099s) and reconcile tax liabilities.
• Reconcile payroll data with the general ledger and support month‑end close activities.
• Partner with People Partners to audit PTO, sick leave, and FMLA accruals.
