Payroll & Benefits Representative

About the role

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Payroll & Benefits Representative to provide professional HR support for central offices, ensuring accurate payroll processing and benefits administration for state employees.

Key responsibilities

• Process all central office HR personnel transactions including timekeeping, payroll, wage adjustments, status changes, and retirement.
• Review payrolls and related personnel actions for accuracy and maintain up‑to‑date personnel files and salary records.
• Serve as a liaison to department employees and bureau staff, providing guidance on benefits, leaves of absence, FMLA, and related inquiries.
• Provide orientation and assistance on insurance, retirement/deferred compensation, voluntary payroll authorizations, and other employee benefits.

Required profile

• Experience completing professional human‑resources assignments and tasks in a government or large‑organization setting.
• Ability to interpret and apply statewide policies and procedures for payroll and benefits.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in processing payroll and maintaining personnel records.
• Effective communication skills to assist employees and staff with benefits and leave questions.
