Ophthalmic Technician Apprenticeship

About the role

The Ophthalmic Technician Apprentice program is a structured training pathway within Ochsner's Workforce Development Program, designed to prepare individuals for a career as an Ophthalmic Technician. Apprentices work under licensed providers and experienced staff, gaining hands‑on experience through coursework, clinical rotations, and on‑the‑job training.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in a formal apprenticeship curriculum that includes classroom instruction, clinical rotations, and required training hours.
• Assist with patient flow, preparing examination rooms, and organizing patient information for provider review.
• Learn to perform basic ophthalmic assessments and preliminary testing under supervision.
• Document patient information in the medical record according to department guidelines.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Preferably 1 year of experience in a healthcare, clinical, or patient‑facing environment.
• Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Certified Ophthalmology Assistant/Technician credentials during the apprenticeship.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced clinical environment under supervision.

Required skills

• Proficiency with computers, software, and web‑based applications.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Knowledge of ophthalmic clinical procedures and equipment.
