Merchandising Assistant Store Manager (Training)

About the role

The Merchandising Assistant Store Manager in Training (MASM-IT) gains hands-on experience in the key responsibilities of a Specialty Assistant Store Manager at The Home Depot. The training lasts up to 6 weeks and includes a structured program of hands-on experience, mentorship and leadership development. Trainees learn the Manager on Duty duties and how to oversee the Merchandising departments (Garden, Hardware, Lumber, Building Materials, Plumbing and Electrical) so that customer service, product availability and store presentation succeed.

Key responsibilities

• Customer experience: supervise associates in the selling effort, drive customer service and engagement, and resolve customer concerns promptly.
• Operations management: run opening and closing duties, follow company policies and procedures, know store SOPs (including safety compliance) and help reduce shrink.
• Safety: make sure self and associates follow safety and hazmat procedures and Safety Matters guidelines.
• Sales and productivity: plan merchandise placement and signing, support stock integrity through inventory management, and learn to operate store equipment and systems and manage daily financial operations.
• Training and preparation for the Assistant Manager position: cover operations, customer service, sales and profitability, staffing and scheduling, resolving stock shortages, performance reviews and the disciplinary process, and complete all assigned training modules and assessments.

Required profile

• Able to work in the United States and at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or GED; preferred: bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
• Preferred: 3 years of work experience and 3 years of leadership experience.
• Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Working conditions

• Reports to the Store Manager, with no direct reports.
• Typically requires overnight travel of less than 5% of the time.
• Indoor work; must stand or walk continuously and lift or carry moderate-weight items (8-20 pounds).
• Pay range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Nevada, New York City, Ithaca (NY), Westchester County (NY) and Washington residents: $60,000 - $75,000.
