Medical Laboratory Scientist – Core Lab – Days

About the role

Ochsner is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist to work day shifts in its Core Lab. The role involves receiving and preparing specimens, performing a wide range of laboratory tests, and ensuring accurate results for patient diagnosis and treatment.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing independently, adhering to established time frames and protocols.
• Conduct quality control, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting, documenting corrective actions when results fall out of control.
• Maintain regulatory compliance, follow safety guidelines, and support proficiency testing and accreditation standards.
• Participate in performance‑improvement initiatives, manage inventory of supplies and reagents, and adapt interactions to respect patient privacy.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or a related scientific field.
• Current Clinical Lab Scientist Generalist license or trainee permit in the state of practice, with a requirement to obtain the Generalist license within 90 days of hire.
• ASCP, AMT, or AAB generalist certification to be obtained within 90 days of hire; additional discipline certification if working in an Academic Medical Center.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information professionally.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Windows‑style applications and data‑entry systems for patient information.
• Laboratory testing techniques, quality‑control procedures, and instrument calibration.
• Phlebotomy procedures and safe handling of blood, body fluids, and tissue specimens.
• Analytical problem‑solving and judgment in conflict resolution.
