Job description
About the role
Techtronic Industries, a global leader in cordless technology for outdoor power equipment, power tools, floor care appliances and accessories, is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer for its Ryobi Outdoor Products Advanced Engineering team at the Innovation Center in Anderson, SC. Advanced Engineering works upstream of traditional new product development: it turns early concepts into validated mechanical systems, proving out technical assumptions and reducing risk through analysis, prototyping and testing. The role suits a hands-on engineer who likes turning ambiguous product ideas into working, tested, manufacturable solutions.
Key responsibilities
- Develop advanced mechanical concepts for next-generation outdoor power equipment and battery-powered products
- Create mechanisms, structures and integrated assemblies balancing performance, durability, manufacturability, cost and user experience
- Use first-principles analysis, hand calculations, simulation, benchmarking and test data to guide design decisions
- Build, test and iterate functional prototypes to validate assumptions and mature concepts
- Define system requirements, user operation methods, design trade-offs and acceptance criteria
- Translate early concepts into robust, production-ready designs for downstream engineering teams
- Partner with Product Management, Engineering, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality and others
- Communicate findings, risks and recommendations to engineering leadership and stakeholders, and contribute to milestones, schedules and risk assessments
Required profile
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- 3+ years of mechanical design experience in product development, advanced engineering, concept maturation or innovation-focused roles
- Ability to manage multiple projects or concepts at different stages of maturity
- High degree of autonomy, ownership, curiosity and proactivity
- Willingness to travel about 5-10%, including domestic and international travel
- U.S. work-authorized status supporting long-term employment and a pathway to permanent residency; visitors, students, exchange, treaty investor/trader or other temporary statuses are not considered
Required skills
- Strong 3D CAD proficiency, such as NX, SolidWorks or similar
- Mechanical design fundamentals: mechanisms, structures, engineering materials, manufacturing processes and tolerances
- Prototype building, test plan development and use of data to improve designs
- Preferred: FEA, CFD, dynamic simulation, gear design tools, rapid prototyping, vibration/sound/airflow/thermal testing, and integrated electrical-mechanical systems
