Manager, Communications

About the role

The Center for Global Sustainability at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy is seeking a Manager, Communications to lead all communications activities. Reporting to the Assistant Center Director and working closely with the School’s Senior Director of Strategic Communications, the role will shape the Center’s brand, amplify research, and engage diverse audiences.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and execute communications campaigns that translate Center priorities into clear messaging.
• Develop and edit news stories, research highlights, newsletters, web content, and other communications products.
• Manage digital communications, including website content, social media, email campaigns and content governance.
• Coordinate media relations, press materials, interview preparation and media coverage tracking.
• Oversee brand implementation and creative services such as reports, infographics, photography, video and collateral.
• Provide communications support for events, stakeholder engagement and external partnerships.
• Supervise communications staff, student employees and external vendors.
• Monitor performance metrics and recommend improvements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional communications or marketing experience.
• One year of experience leading or supervising staff.
• Experience in higher‑education, research centers, nonprofits or think‑tanks, preferably with climate, energy or sustainability topics.
• Proven ability to translate complex research for non‑technical audiences.
• Strong editorial judgment, attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
