Local Bridge Operations Group Engineer (Civil Engineer V)

About the role

The State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, is hiring one Local Bridge Operations Group Engineer (Civil Engineer V) in Springfield, IL. The position is accountable for developing policy and providing structural and hydraulic engineering direction for local public agency (LPA) bridge and culvert matters, including rehabilitation, repairs, emergency repairs, special plan review and construction issues. It works with the Bureau of Bridges and Structures' Bridge Management and Inspection Unit on the local bridge inventory and the Specifications for Illinois Bridge Inventory Manual. The position is salaried, full time, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday to Friday, with a hybrid schedule of 1 to 5 days per week in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and update policies for the design, construction and maintenance of local agency bridges.
• Work with the Bridge Management and Inspection Unit to keep the Specifications for Illinois Bridge Inventory Manual up to date with current practice.
• Review preliminary bridge designs and hydraulic reports for major structures to ensure they meet sound engineering judgment and policy.
• Provide expertise in reviewing repair and rehabilitation plans.
• Evaluate and accept permit loads, resurfacings and consultant bridge ratings for LPA structures in the state.

Required profile

• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; the State does not sponsor employment visas.
