Investigative Journalism Professor and Investigations Editor

About the role

The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland seeks an experienced investigative journalist to join the faculty as an Investigative Journalism Professor and to serve as the lead Investigations Editor for the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. This dual role combines teaching, mentorship, and hands‑on editorial leadership within a nationally recognized investigative reporting unit.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in investigative journalism, data‑driven reporting, and digital research methods.
• Supervise student investigative projects and provide mentorship on research design, data analysis, and storytelling.
• Lead the Howard Center’s investigative teams, overseeing story development, editorial standards, and publication pipelines.
• Collaborate with partner newsrooms such as NPR, PBS NewsHour, and the Associated Press on joint investigations.
• Secure and manage research funding, grants, and partnerships to sustain the Center’s operations.
• Contribute to the College’s academic community through research, conference presentations, and service on committees.

Required profile

• Extensive professional experience in investigative journalism with a record of published, award‑winning investigations.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor students at the university level.
• Strong editorial judgment and experience managing multi‑disciplinary reporting teams.
• Commitment to journalistic ethics, First Amendment principles, and diversity in newsrooms.
