Professor of the Practice in Sports Journalism

About the role

The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland seeks an experienced journalist to serve as its next director and Professor of the Practice. This full‑time, on‑site position leads students in producing enterprise and investigative sports journalism that addresses race, gender, culture, politics and policy.

Key responsibilities

• Direct the Povich Center’s curriculum, workshops, research, and public events.
• Guide students in creating professional‑quality investigative sports stories across multiple platforms.
• Develop partnerships, secure funding, and manage personnel to support high‑impact journalism projects.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 15 years of journalism experience, including investigative or enterprise sports reporting.
• Proven ability to produce storytelling that elevates discussions of race, gender, culture, politics or policy.
• Experience reaching new audiences on multiple platforms.

• Salary range $185,000–$210,000 per year
