International Student & Scholar Advisor

About the role

The International Student & Scholar Advisor (ISSA) serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) at Northeastern University, providing immigration advising and support to a diverse international community.

Key responsibilities

• Advise and assist F‑1 and J‑1 students and scholars on maintaining status, employment authorization, and acculturation.
• Maintain accurate SEVIS records, create Forms I‑20/DS‑2019, and report required events to federal agencies.
• Provide guidance to academic departments on regulatory requirements and institutional policies.
• Coordinate with government agencies such as DHS, SEVP, DOS, CBP, and USCIS on student requests and data corrections.
• Design and deliver regulatory training and support campus‑wide orientation programs.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
• Bachelor’s degree and 1–3 years of experience as a DSO/ARO working with SEVIS.
• Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with intercultural competence.
• Ability to manage a high‑volume caseload independently in a fast‑paced environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Experience using SEVIS and familiarity with immigration regulations.
