Infrastructure Engineer - Card Issuing & Reconciliation

About the role

EQL Tech represents a well-funded startup that has raised $16M and is building the financial rails for families to access State education funds (School Choice Funds). As Infrastructure Engineer, you will own every dollar that moves through the company's stack, from card issuing to disbursements, reconciliation and regulatory reporting, working directly with the co-founders. The position is in-office in San Francisco, CA.

Key responsibilities

• Design a money movement flow: ledgered internal state, transaction lifecycle management, idempotency, retries and deterministic replay.
• Build reliable reconciliation between the internal ledger, card network events, banking events and vendor reports, with tools to investigate mismatches quickly.
• Minimise operational risk by building guardrails against double-spending, duplicate webhook processing, inconsistent balances and orphaned settlements.
• Own and evolve a multi-service monorepo covering an event-driven pipeline, a payments API (onboarding, credit, cards), balance health checks and regulatory reporting jobs.
• Make architecture decisions on handling billions of dollars in state-funded educational payments, including card issuing infrastructure, processor integrations and fraud and credit risk controls.
• Keep independent ledgers aligned despite asynchronous event processing, and build automated health checks and reconciliation systems that catch discrepancies early.

Required profile

• Able to work in person with the team in San Francisco, CA or Phoenix, AZ (visa support available).
• Strong focus on correctness and auditability, comfortable tracing a single transaction through the entire stack.
• Built systems that stay predictable even when banks, queues and vendors are unreliable.
• Craves ownership and wants to be the trusted person when money is moving.

Required skills

• Experience with Lithic, Column, LoanPro, Stripe Issuing or comparable card and banking infrastructure is a strong plus.

• Salary of $125,000 to $200,000+ per year, commensurate with experience.
