Heavy Equipment Operator II

About the role

The Heavy Equipment Operator II works in the Structures and Grounds Division of the Airport Maintenance Department, maintaining safe conditions of grounds and roadways at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) or Reagan National Airport (DCA). The role involves operating a variety of heavy construction and airfield‑specific equipment for road construction, repairs, snow removal, and emergency response.

Key responsibilities

• Operate complex heavy equipment, computer‑controlled cranes, and airfield‑specific machinery for runway, taxiway, and roadway repairs and maintenance.
• Perform inspections of runways, taxiways, access highways, and other airport roads, and clear or repair roadways as needed.
• Load and unload de‑icing fluid tankers, fabricate pumping stations, and manage pesticide/herbicide applications.
• Excavate, grade, and shore abutments for utility installation and repair, complying with VDOT standards.
• Provide training to other trades workers on specialized equipment operation.

Required profile

• Four years of progressively responsible heavy‑equipment experience, with at least three years operating motorized construction equipment.
• High school diploma or GED; valid state driver’s license; ability to obtain Class A CDL and Virginia pesticide applicator certification within 90 days.
• Ability to work safely in adverse weather, lift up to 70 lb, and be on call 24 hours for essential services.

Required skills

• Heavy equipment operation (cranes, bulldozers, sweepers, snow‑plows).
• Manual, hydraulic, and electronic control system adjustments.
• Use of computer‑controlled work‑order and time‑attendance systems.
• Knowledge of VDOT lane‑closure regulations and pesticide/herbicide safety procedures.
• Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) operation.
