Group Leader - Scrap Steel Warehouse

About the role

The Group Leader is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the scrap steel warehouse. The role reports directly to the site Operations Manager and covers the safety, performance and continuous improvement of plant operations.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure plant employees carry out operations safely and efficiently, and that all plant areas meet safety requirements
• Monitor the performance of receiving, inspection and shipping functions, and control inventory, storage layout and design
• Lead preventative actions to reduce or eliminate waste and quality problems, and support the continuous improvement program (kaizen)
• Help establish work instructions, process procedures and standards, and assist in a self-sufficient preventative maintenance program
• Support GMI environmental matters and prepare reports as requested by management
• Manage subordinate staff, including interviewing, training, assigning work, handling complaints and recommending performance reviews, rewards and disciplinary actions
• Assist with hiring for plant positions and recommend training needs

Required profile

• Two-year degree from a college or technical school, or one year of related experience and training, or an equivalent combination
• Ability to read and write safety rules, quality manuals, work instructions and reports, and to speak effectively to groups
• Ability to use basic math, including percentages, ratios, area, circumference and volume, and to interpret bar graphs
• Ability to solve practical problems and follow written, oral, diagram or schedule instructions
• Knowledge of the metric system and ability to use Microsoft Windows and Lotus Notes
• Overhead crane license, forklift license and mechanical inclination
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds, work near moving mechanical parts, and operate an overhead crane from 28 inches off the ground; acrophobia disqualifies candidates
